Up Against it

"Up Against It - oil painted clay and bronze figures and large scale drawings are juxtaposed with hyper-realistic paintings in an eclectic exhibition set to challenge pre-conceived notions of 'realism' in art" - so was the claim on the card for this exhibition which Sean Henry curated at the Air Gallery in July 1997. With his work on one floor of the gallery, paintings by Machiko Edmondson (now at Victoria Miro) and Jeremy Dickinson (Faggionato) were installed on the second floor of the gallery, together with photography by Tim Booth and sculpture by realist american artist Lisa Reinertson. The show was successful, in terms of attendance and sales, and led directly to the subsequent Villiers David Prize exhibition 'A Pilgrimage' two years later.
